The Storm Inside: Interview with Julia Herkel

“I can control storms,” Amanda answered flatly, sliding off of the table.

The second advisor wrinkled his nose. “What are you going to do, then? Drizzle on the criminal?”

And that’s only a part of the awesomeness found inside Julia Herkel‘s newest book, The Storm Inside. I was lucky enough to be able to interview this new indie author to celebrate her book’s release, so without further ado, let’s take the celebration up a notch. Along with some awesome quotes from her book because I know you’re curious.

When did you start writing?

Julia: I guess I started when I first learned how to write. As a homeschooled kid, my Mom had me write a new story in a small notebook every day; I got to illustrate them, as well. (She saved the notebook; boy, did I ever have a twisted mind back then ?)

(Madi Commentary: Hehe, I illustrated all of my first stories, too.)

How did you become interested in writing?

Julia: I became interested in using my free time to write because of my oldest sister, actually. She wrote her own story, and I was inspired to write my own book. (What I came up with was a five chapter book that was five pages long about a Princess who discovered a magical treasure map that led her to a trapdoor under the buffet table in the palace. I mean, at least I was creative, right…?)

(Madi Commentary: Haha, that’s awesome. XD)

Amanda had been crying last night alone in the bathroom for a reason, after all.

Where is your favorite place to write?

Julia: I love writing on the couch in the living room; it’s so comfy!

(Madi Commentary: Ooh, I tried writing on the couch a couple of times. But my back is mean and doesn’t like it. Can I steal your couch?)

Tears threatened Amanda, and her sight blurred. At the same moment, it began to rain. It was like the sky was crying for her. No, Amanda realized; it was her.

When did you start writing The Storm Inside?

Julia: I started planning it on the same day that I started my blog: August 8, this past summer.

(Madi Commentary: I love your blog!)

What inspired you to write The Storm Inside?

Julia: It was kind of a mash-up of the idea of a girl who could control storms, and how emotions stuck inside of you feel like a tornado that you swallowed.

“Not everyone can be a fossil like you, your Excellency,” the other boy answered drily. “Sorry she doesn’t complete the package with creaky bones.”

What was your favorite part about writing The Storm Inside?

Julia: Having an excuse to stay up drinking tea when I should’ve been in bed. ?

(Madi Commentary: HEHE.)

What was your favorite scene to write from The Storm Inside?

Julia: The climax! It was the easiest to write, and required the least editing.

Amanda leaned over to Audrina, whispering questionably, “Shiny?”

“Griffons love shiny things,” Audrina whispered back.

“But who does that leave, then?” Advisor Mason threw his hands into the air.

Which character from The Storm Inside is your favorite?

Julia: Alma. She was the funnest thing of the whole book to think up.

(Madi Commentary: Ooh, Alma. I would’ve sworn you were gonna say Amanda!)

Do you plan on writing any more books after The Storm Inside?

Julia: Writing has become a part of my life. I’ve already got several other drafts of books hanging around on my computer, and ideas flying in my head. I don’t think I’m ever going to give up writing. ?

“I’m afraid,” Amanda whispered.

Do you plan on writing for the rest of your life, or do you see it as just a hobby?

Julia: I have hopes of someday being able to make enough money from my books and blog that I won’t have to get a job (but working for Chapters part time anyway, because, ya know, discounts on all those books I want ?) I think I’ll just keep self-publishing my books, and building up my blog audience. Hey, in a few years, maybe we’ll see my work on the shelves of a real bookstore! ?

(Madi Commentary: I think we will! 😉 )

After having read it myself, I can definitely say you don’t want to miss Julia’s new book! You can buy The Storm Inside right here, and be sure to visit Julia’s blog while you’re at it.

I had the same question! Having read the book myself, I’d say it’s appropriate for all ages. Amazon says it’s good for ages 10-17.
